Aldi Port – A Nice Surprise
The holidays are one of the most expensive times of the year and not just because of the whole gift giving thing. Feeding the ravenous masses who descend on unwary (and sometimes unwilling) family members can cost a small fortune. Those of you who have been following my posts may know a little secret though – Christmas with Aldi is both tasty and inexpensive *if* you choose wisely.
Take this port (no, actually don’t – I still have half a bottle left…). It is quite unassuming looking. Pretty standard-looking label and nothing that really sets it apart from other ports you may have seen in the past. There is one thing different though – the price.
The flavour is as you might expect of a port that is quite this inexpensive. It is flavourful but perhaps just ever so slightly rough around the edges if you are sober and haven’t eaten anything but a single salted crisp snatched from the baby. After a meal this is going to be perfect.
The flavour is light as well, with fewer complex notes and a single cherry edge note carrying through the whole experience. There isn’t a vast complexity to it that you will want to linger over but nor is it going to strip paint off the walls. This is a perfectly decent, extremely inexpensive port.
This is going to be the port you buy a case of 6 of and have in the kitchen for when unexpected guests turn up and you throw together a cheese board and drinks. It’s also going to be your Christmas Day and Boxing Day after dinner drink. And quite possibly every day between that and New Year’s Eve.
If you are rich there are lots of other ports on the market which are smooth and rich and delicious and whatnot. If you are being frugal like most people this holiday season, do your shopping at Aldi. This is a perfectly respectable port and with or after food will be delightful.
Good to know, always looking for a tasty, reasonably priced apertif.
Should go great with some good chocolate for after dinner too!
Can you get it at most local wine and spirit stores?
Thank you,
Dodi
You can get this port at any Aldi worldwide!
